Curriculum
ACADEMIC GOALS FOR SUCCESS
Rigorous Curriculum Design
(RCD) is a model for designing or redesigning curriculum that represents a rigorous 21st century set of comprehensive units of study aligned with existing state and the Next Generation State Standards. Our academic programs include precise learning targets, meaningful and relevant lessons and activities, and multiple opportunities for our scholars to succeed.

Reading & Writing
Our goal is that all of our students are able to achieve one of life’s most important achievements of learning to read and write. When students are successful in literacy development, their learning is enhanced in other subject areas and their love for learning increases. As a result, our school is committed to ensuring high expectations and rigorous instruction for all students.
We utilize a balanced approach combining language and literature to develop student proficiency in phonemic awareness, vocabulary acquisition, concepts of print, literary text standard and the writing process, writing applications and writing convention.
To achieve these goals we utilize the following programs:

Mathematics
The Dr. Betty Shabazz School believes that mathematical problem solving is vital in developing logical thinkers and life-long problem solvers. Students need to be able to work with authentic situations and approach problem solving in various ways. To achieve this, students need a variety of strategies and tools at their disposal. Implementation for the formative assessment process and frequent opportunities for feedback and differentiated instruction continues to be the foundation for increased student achievement.
To assist students achieve these goals, we utilize the following programs:
